OpticalTel Partners with UM 'Canes & FIU Internship Program Supports Career Opportunities

- By Christopher Malter,

Coral Gables, FL - October 24, 2013 - OpticalTel, a fully integrated telecable company offering Video, Internet, and Telephone services all from one source, today unveiled a new Internship Partnership with The University of Miami and FIU to transition students to future employment opportunities at the company.

"We are quite excited to be partnering with these two very prestigious universities", said Luis Rodriguez, President & COO of OpticalTel. "This relationship is beneficial to us all as we will be able to identify the right candidates to fit our ongoing needs."

OpticalTel has seen unparalleled growth in the last several years increasing its workforce by more than 50 percent. In particular, the company is in need of candidates majoring in computer engineering, network engineering, marketing, accounting and business.

According to Rodriguez, "we view this as an investment in human capital that will positively influence Miami’s workforce and its tech sector in particular."

Telecable Firm Adding Jobs, Investment

- By Scott Blake, Miami Today News

Luis Rodriguez uses words like nimble, flexible and efficient when describing his company, OpticalTel.

The Coral Gables-based telecable firm has had to be that way to survive in the shadows of much larger competitors such as AT&T and Comcast.

Actually, the company is doing more than surviving. Mr. Rodriguez, OpticalTel's president and chief operating officer, said this week the company plans to add 75 to 100 employees and make $25 million worth of capital investments over the next three years.

That isn't much in the world of the telecom giants. But Mr. Rodriguez doesn't tippy-toe around when talking about the advantages that he says his company has over the industry's big boys.

"Comcast is a cable company trying to become a phone company," he says, "and AT&T is a phone company trying to become a cable company."

Those companies probably would beg to differ, but the business of so-called "bundling" combining high-speed internet, phone service and other digital services is a competitive one where smaller players must find an edge or fade away.

OpticalTel's edge, according to Mr. Rodriguez, is staying competitive on price with the big players while trying to outdo them on customer service. Because OpticalTel has a relatively small customer base of about 25,000, he says, the company can respond faster and better to their needs.

"In order for them to make a decision on something, it may take a month," he says about the large corporations. "But for us, it takes a day."

OpticalTel, also known as Optical Telecommunications Inc., started in South Miami in 2004. It now operates out of a suite at 1360 S Dixie Highway in Coral Gables. There's also a field office in the Fort Lauderdale area.

The privately-owned firm has three primary shareholders: Mr. Rodriguez, who supervises the company's day-to-day operations; CEO Mario Bustamante Sr., who provides strategic leadership and works with the company's board of directors; and William Davis, chairman of the board.

OpticalTel's customers span from Greater Miami to Port St. Lucie on the state's East Coast and from Fort Myers to the Tampa area on the West Coast. They are mainly residential customers clustered in condominium and apartment buildings and business customers clustered in office buildings.

The company uses fiber-optic technology to provide what it calls "quad-play bundles," offering internet, phone, video and alarm service.

Currently, the company has about 40 employees, with short-term plans to hire about 10 more this month and long-term plans to add up to 100.

Mr. Rodriguez says many of the positions will pay an average of about $50,000 a year and include network engineers, computer programmers and technicians.

The company is expanding its staff with help from the Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County's public-private economic development agency.

Mr. Rodriguez says the Beacon Council is providing about $450,000 in state and local funds to the company over a six-year period, contingent upon the company adding the jobs it has promised to create in certain intervals.

As part of the deal, OpticalTel plans to take on interns from local universities with the objective of hiring them permanently, which meshes with the Beacon Council's One Community One Goal job creation initiative involving local schools and businesses.

In addition, OpticalTel has pledged to investment $25 million in new equipment and expanded facilities.

The expansion will help the company take on more customers without sacrificing quality of service, Mr. Rodriguez says, adding; "We're in growth mode."

Subscriber growth leads to expansion for HControl Holdings

- By Brian Bandell, South Florida Business Journal

Strong subscriber growth for its Internet, TV and phone service has led HControl Holdings to launch its expansion in Coral Gables, with a location in Fort Lauderdale likely to follow.

With help from the Beacon Council, HControl secured $360,000 in state incentives and $90,000 in Miami-Dade County incentives to create 75 jobs as it expands its office at 1360 S. Dixie Highway by 12,000 square feet. The salaries would average $60,833. The company, which also does business as OpticalTel, plans to invest $25 million there.

Above Photo: Luis Rodriguez of HControl Holdings says the company expects 50 percent growth this year.

Founded in 2004, HControl has doubled its subscriber base in each of the past three years, President and COO Luis Rodriguez said. Now with 25,000 business and residential subscribers, it expects 50 percent growth this year. Other executives include CEO Mario M. Bustamante and Chairman William Davis. Rodriguez said BankUnited has been helping to fund its growth.

"We have been fortunate growing in this industry," Rodriguez said. "As a new company, you have to solidify yourself in this market."

HControl utilizes a fiber optic cable network in partnership with AT&T, but it also places its own cables to service businesses and large community associations that sign deals with the company. It uses separate fiber strands for Internet and video to improve the speed. In order to compete with larger companies, HControl offers discounts of up to 40 percent off retail to large associations.

For its TV service, HControl gets its content through a partnership with Dish Network. Yet, Rodriguez said customers could decline the video feed and use the Internet connection to sign up for streaming programming, such as that provided by Hulu or Netflix.

HControl also manages subscribers for other telecommunications companies. Rodriguez said about 18 percent of its subscribers come from managed accounts.

"Other companies like ours out there are struggling because of their technology," Rodriguez said. "So they come in here and want us to replicate [ours] for their subscribers. We will manage their applications. We will make money and take an interest in those companies."

Coral Gables is not the only place where HControl is growing. One of its affiliate companies purchased the distressed mortgage on a 27,083-square-foot office building at 2962 Trivium Circle in Fort Lauderdale. Property owner Trivium Park at Marina Mile was previously hit with a $4.7 million foreclosure lawsuit.

Rodriguez confirmed that the company plans to use that building for another office.

"With what we have in the pipeline, we are in a huge growth mode," Rodriguez said. "Theres a lot of good talent leaving here to other states, and it is kind of frustrating for us. We need engineering and IT people, and to maintain these individuals here."

The Beacon Council assists HControl with expansion

- By Maria Camacho, The Beacon Council

The Beacon Council, the leader in Miami-Dade County's economic development since 1985, is pleased to announce that HControl Holdings, a company that provides digital TV, high speed internet, and telephone services, is expanding its Coral Gables location, adding 75 direct jobs within three years.

"We are very pleased to have the support of the State of Florida, Miami-Dade County and the city of Coral Gables as we grow and expand the company," said Luis Rodriguez, President & COO of HControl Holdings. "We look forward to creating a lasting partnership with The University of Miami, Florida International University and others in the creation of many jobs in the telecommunications industry."

The company has committed $25 million in capital investment to develop a 12,000-square-foot network operations center in Miami-Dade County Commissioner Xavier Suarez's district. They had evaluated the option of relocating to Dallas, as part of its partnership with a content provider, but decided to stay in Miami-Dade County.

"It's important that Florida remains a business base for HControl Holdings because of its value to our IT sector, which is a target for economic growth statewide," said Florida Secretary of Commerce Gray Swoope, who serves as President & CEO of Enterprise Florida, the state's principal economic development organization. "The company's choice to remain in Florida shows that we have the workforce and business climate needed to help progressive organizations grow."

The Beacon Council assisted HControl with state and local incentives. "Miami-Dade County is one of the most important data transmission hubs in the world," said Frank R. Nero, President and CEO of The Beacon Council. "HControl joins a series of hi-tech telecommunication companies that have relocated or expanded in Miami-Dade County in the past 18 months."

Said Jim Cason, Mayor of Coral Gables: "We are delighted to support innovative businesses like HControl Holdings, and their plans to expand here in Coral Gables. Being able to access the right people and resources for business development is critical for success."

"Connecting homes directly to fiber offers enormous improvements in the bandwidth for consumers," said OpticalTel’s Chief Marketing Officer Ruben Perez-Sanchez. OpticalTel’s fiber network offers the biggest bandwidth at the fastest speeds so, people can now watch movies, download music and songs from your favorite artists and surf the web at lightning speeds."

Current cable infrastructures traditionally involve modems and DSL which struggle to squeeze increments of higher bandwidth out of their existing technologies without having to actually install fiber optics.
